MARTIAL LAW HALTS RACE WAR

One hundred seventy-five men, women and children were killed. According to an official estimate made at 2 o'clock this afternoon [sic]. Maj. Charles W. Daley, inspector of the police department [paper torn] He said that an investigation would show that scores of negroes were burned to death when the negro district was swept [paper torn] flames.
The black refugees will be removed to the county fair grounds late today in accordance with an order issued by the military committee, composed of city officials and business men. They will be held there pending an investigation. The committee said that they believed about 2,000 of the negroes would be released before night. National Guard machine gunners and infantrymen will be stationed at the fair grounds to guard the prisoners.
