At the Library
Lions and tigers and bears – and bugs – oh my! Head to the Tulsa Zoo on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. and catch the reading bug as Tulsa City-County Library kicks off the 2008 summer reading program.
Children and teens who sign up for the reading program at the zoo kickoff event will receive free admission to the zoo. Mohawk Park requires a $2 parking fee. Just look for the library’s sign-up table at the zoo entrance.
Besides all the great regular amenities the zoo has to offer, the kickoff event will feature performances by local magician Chris Capstone and the band Black Sheep Drive, a live insect show, face painting, contests and games. Rock out with Radio Disney from 1:30 to 3 p.m. with high-energy games, activities and prizes, and music and song requests. Plus, enter a drawing to win free summer classes for youths at Tulsa Community College. The Tulsa Library Trust, Tulsa Zoo, Radio Disney AM 1380, Tulsa Transit and TCC are sponsoring “Catch the Reading Bug at @ the Tulsa Zoo.”
You also can sign up for the summer reading program at any Tulsa City-County Library location or bookmobile stop, starting May 19 through Aug. 3.
The Tulsa Library Trust, Tulsa World, NewsChannel 8, Tulsa Zoo, Project Teen: The Peggy V. Helmerich Special Project Fund and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries are the presenting sponsors of the summer reading program.
Kids who join the children’s program, called “Catch the Reading Bug,” can earn coupons for free admission to local attractions and free food items from area restaurants, plus enter a drawing for computers, bicycles and other great prizes, by reading eight books and visiting the library four times this summer. Children who read 12 more books will receive a plush, stuffed ladybug as a bonus award.
Teens who have completed sixth grade can sign up for the teen summer reading program, called “Metamorphosis @ your library.” Teens who read six books to complete the program will earn an acrobat pen and coupons for free entertainment and food items, plus enter a drawing for cool prizes, provided by the Tulsa World and Project Teen, including a laptop computer, iPods, DVD players, camcorders, gift cards and more.
For more information about the summer reading program, contact your neighborhood library, call 596-7977 or visit the library’s Web site at www.tulsalibrary.org.
