november 1 -- new law in Oklahoma day
Many people know November 1 as All Saints Day or Dia de los Muertos, but in Oklahoma it’s typically the day new laws take effect. Tomorrow, Oklahomans will see 186 new laws go into effect. Although, most won’t likely impact your life directly, here are few highlights.
- Those with concealed carry permits will be able to carry guns onto CareerTech campuses… just remember to leave your gun in your car.
- With regard to personal lawsuits, there will now be a $350,000 hard cap on noneconomic damages, often referred to as pain and suffering.
- HB 2131, the first significant piece of legislation favoring alternative sentences for nonviolent offenders, expands both the use of community sentencing programs and the electronic monitoring of low-risk, nonviolent inmates.
- HB 1593 takes away collective bargaining rights from nonuniformed municipal employees in most of Oklahoma’s largest cities. It also repeals a state law that prohibits nonuniformed city workers from striking.
- With HB 1888 taking effect, Oklahoma will be the third state to restrict abortions on the basis of fetal pain.
