state of the state wrap up
The rumors were true, Governor Fallin’s big sell in the annual State of the State address was the Oklahoma Tax Reduction and Simplification Act, which calls for the gradual elimination of state income tax. Under the Governor’s proposed plan, tax rates for taxable income would decrease and many of the tax credits and deductions, including child care deductions and the sales tax rebate, would be eliminated. Tax rates would continue to decrease at at gradual rate until they reach zero. Here is a link the an overview of the Governor’s proposed plan: http://1.usa.gov/wnSJXO.
Other points of the Governor’s address included the current strength of Oklahoma’s economy (woo-hoo!!), a partnership to increase Oklahoma’s number of college grads, streamlining state government, making state government a leader in energy efficiency, improving transportation infrastructure, and kicking smoking on state government property.
Between the Governor’s plans and those of the legislators, I’m sure it will be another exciting session in Oklahoma politics.
