Categories: Press Release

Romance is alive and well at the Tulsa City-County Library. Experience the lovely delights of summer at the “Summer of Love!” series, beginning May 29.

The free programs will be held at Central Library, Fourth Street and Denver Avenue, in Aaronson Auditorium.

The Council Oak Men’s Chorale will kick off the series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. Your favorite men’s chorus will serenade you with classic love songs and other up-tempo favorites as a preview for their summer season. Prepare to swoon!

If you’re a fan of romance novels, you won’t want to miss “You, Me and Tea With Romance’s Most Popular Authors” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 2. Romance novels come in many different flavors, from paranormal to historical. Join four popular but very different romance authors - Julia Quinn, Rachel Gibson, Elizabeth Boyle and Pamela Palmer - as they discuss their inspirations, how they write and the state of romance novels today. Karen Larsen, news anchor, KJRH Channel 2, will moderate the discussion. The authors’ books will be for sale, and a book signing and tea with light refreshments will follow the presentation. Wear your favorite boa or tiara!

“Novel Talk Presents: Re@l Love - From Jane Austen to Reality TV” is the featured program at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. Learn how to read Jane Austen from an English professor; explore the darker side of reality TV love shows like “The Bachelor"; and meet “Attachments” author Rainbow Rowell, who writes “stories about love, but not love stories.” A book signing will follow.

The series also features “Read a Romance,” an online summer reading opportunity for romance fans. If you read a romance or love story between June 1 and July 31 and tell us about it online, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate from Ihloff Salon and Day Spa. Register at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/readaromance.

02:51:55 pm Permalink I’m taking a trip this summer and need to learn how to communicate with the locals. Can the library help me learn a foreign language?

Categories: Database

Yes, we have a database called Mango that is great for learning or practicing a foreign language. The lessons use a combination of audio and visual cues to give a more comprehensive guide to understanding words and phrases. When using Mango, you have the option of creating an account in order to keep track of your progress through the lessons.

Mango provides basic courses in over 20 languages, with more in depth lessons in Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. There are also a number of ESL courses available as well.

To access this database, simply perform a title search in our catalog for ‘Mango Languages’ or go to the M section of our databases list in the library’s Research page.

02:05:09 pm Permalink I’m looking for some good book suggestions. Can the library help me find something that will fit my tastes?

Categories: Library Web Site, Book Information

Well, we can certainly give it a shot. The Tulsa library offers a service called Your Next Great Read, which compiles a list of books and authors for individuals based on their personalized reading preferences.

The Your Next Great Read service was started in the Spring of 2011, and modeled after the Looking for a Good Book program from the Williamsburg Regional Library System. In the year that the program has existed at TCCL, we’ve created over 400 personalized reading lists for our patrons.

You can find Your Next Great Read on our Books and Reading page. Just fill out the survey regarding genres, topics, and past favorites and we’ll put together a batch of suggested reads for you. You can check out a sample finished reading list to give you an idea of what to expect. Please allow 7-10 business days for your completed list.
