Paranormal Romance

Paranormal

Almost anything supernatural or unexplained by natural causes is included in Paranormal Romances. Vampires, angels, psychics, ghosts, werewolves, witches, spirits, reincarnated people, and other similar characters are all at home within this grouping. Settings can be either historical or contemporary, and as with all romances, the love story drives the plot. Occasionally, aspects of the Paranormal blend with another subtype, resulting in stories, for example, about time-traveling witches or futuristic psychics.
--Kristin Ramsdell, Romance Fiction: A Guide to the Genre (Libraries Unlimited, 1999)

Time Travel

The Time Travel romance features protagonists who are transported from one time period to another. The exchange is usually between the present and some time in the past, but other options are acceptable. Conflicts usually result because of time-based cultural differences (e.g., when a modern heroine ends up in the male-dominated past) or the fact that the hero and heroine are from different time periods and must make sacrifices to stay together. --Kristin Ramsdell, Romance Fiction: A Guide to the Genre (Libraries Unlimited, 1999)
