Central Library Rock & Gem Display
When the City of Tulsa began building a new Central Library in 1965, the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society, encouraged by the Library Board, resolved to put together a permanent mineral display that would add to the educational interests of the library as well as be decorative. A well-planned display, they reasoned, would promote the rock hobby by calling attention to the beauty in rocks in a place frequented by the type of people who are interested in new horizons in their lives.
The final results of their months of hard work are two superb display panels currently featured at the south end of the Research Center on the 4th floor of the Central Library.
At the Library’s Grand Opening on July 1, 1965, Governor Bellmon expressed the feelings of most people when he said, “I am very much impressed; I truly never had any idea that rocks could be so breathtakingly beautiful.”
Read the Lapidary Journal article detailing the process (1965) members of the Tulsa Rock and Mineral Society, and many others in the Tulsa community and beyond, went through to bring the displays to life, and visit the Library to see this beautiful display in living color!
