NEAL McCALEB TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE
CIRCLE OF HONOR
Tulsa City-County Library’s American Indian Resource Center will welcome Neal McCaleb into the Circle of Honor as the 2008 inductee.
McCaleb, an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation, will receive the Circle of Honor award March 1, 10:30 a.m., at Central Library, Fourth Street and Denver Avenue. This event is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by the Maxine and Jack Zarrow Family Foundation, Cherokee Builders Inc., American Indian Resource Center and Tulsa Library Trust, the award consists of a $5,000 honorarium and a medallion.
The Circle of Honor ceremony honors an American Indian for his or her achievements by acknowledging the inductee’s contributions that have enriched others’ lives and by celebrating the inductee’s action in the face of adversity, commitment to the preservation of American Indian culture and legacy for future generations.
McCaleb is the former head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C. He twice has led the Oklahoma transportation system. While transportation secretary and director of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, he helped develop plans for the Kilpatrick Turnpike in Oklahoma City and the Creek Turnpike in Tulsa.
Since leaving the Bureau of Indian Affairs, McCaleb has worked to assist the Chickasaw Nation with the development of long-term economic strategies. He also served as an elected official in the state House of Representatives, where he served four years as the Republican floor leader.
The Circle of Honor award alternates annually with the American Indian Festival of Words Author Award, which recognizes nationally acclaimed American Indian authors. The late Charles Chibitty and Wilma Mankiller were the first two individuals to receive the Circle of Honor award.
TCCL established the American Indian Resource Center to provide a support system for this often overlooked segment of the community and to highlight its history and culture. The library features an extensive collection of books and media by and about American Indians.
