TULSA, Okla. --- Spend an enjoyable evening after hours in the library with three favorite Oklahoma authors while helping raise money and awareness for Tulsa City-County Library’s Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service. In conjunction with National Literacy Awareness Month, Tulsa City-County Library and the Tulsa Library Trust are offering “Chapters: A Casual Evening of Books, Bards and Bites” on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St. Individual reservations are $40 per person. Attendees will enjoy food and wine from some of the Tulsa's favorite restaurants while listening to authors Tim Tharp, Will Thomas and William Bernhardt. Tharp teaches in the humanities department at Rose State College. In addition to writing novels and teaching, Tharp has been a factory hand, construction laborer, psychiatric aide, long-distance hitchhiker and record-store clerk. His first novel, “Falling Dark,” was awarded the Milkweed National Fiction Prize. “Knights of the Hill Country,” his first novel for young adults, won the Oklahoma Book Award and was named to the American Library Association’s Best Books of 2007 list. Tharp’s novel “The Spectacular Now” was a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award. Thomas is the author of the Victorian-era Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn mystery series that includes “Some Danger Involved,” “To Kingdom Come,” “The Limehouse Text,” “The Hellfire Conspiracy,” and “The Black Hand,” which was nominated for a 2009 Shamus Award by the Private Eye Writers of America. Thomas also has been nominated for the Barry Award. Bernhardt is the author of more than 20 novels (most famously, the Ben Kincaid mystery series) and two children’s books. He has edited two anthologies and published numerous stories, essays, puzzles and poems. Bernhardt also hosts the annual William Bernhardt Writing Workshop, created The Fundamentals of Fiction DVD to guide aspiring student writers and founded the HAWK Publishing Group. Authors’ books will be available for purchasing with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the literacy service. Great Decisions Presents: The Building of the National Military Academy of Afghanistan

• Event Description: Given the mission to build a university in Kabul, Afghanistan, with no money and no budget, Col. James Wilhite began a task that would change the shape of higher education for many years to come. He was assigned to start a four-year military academy modeled after West Point for the Afghan National Army. There have been two graduating classes since then, and now women also are included. Wilhite recounts this story in his book "We Answered the Call." Meet Col. Wilhite and hear an update on the military academy and what’s in store for the future. Afterward, he will sign books. Copies will be available for purchasing at the program.
