Library Needs Volunteer Tutors to Help Adults Learn to Read

In Tulsa County, one out of six adults cannot read a newspaper, the label on a prescription medicine bottle or even a road sign, and they cannot fill out a job application.

You can help an adult improve his or her reading and writing skills by volunteering as a literacy tutor for Tulsa City-County Library’s Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service. Currently, more than 50 adults in the Tulsa area are in need of tutors. You are eligible to serve as a tutor if you are 18 or older and are a high-school graduate.

Each trained volunteer is matched with an adult student to provide one-on-one tutoring once or twice a week. Volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment to tutor.

If you’re interested in tutoring an adult, a four-part tutor-training workshop is scheduled on April 15, 17, 22 and 24 from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m. at Central Library, Fourth Street and Denver Avenue. Preregistration is required. The registration deadline is April 14. To register for the workshop or for dates of additional workshops scheduled throughout the year, call 596-7958 or click on www.tulsalibrary.org/literacy.
