Family Literacy

Parental literacy is one of the most important indicators of a child’s academic success.  Nurturing a positive attitude toward reading in the home can help put a stop to the cycle of illiteracy.  The library’s Family Literacy outreach program provides parents and children with new books, information on literacy, and fun workshops about reading with children.

Krueger Read and Grow and Friends First Book

Through generous funding from the Krueger Charitable Trust and the Friends of the Tulsa City County Library, we are able to distribute over 1,500 books each month to low income children in Tulsa County.  These are the only books in the homes of many of these children

Reading to Children

With funding from Target, we offer Every Child Ready to Read workshops to parents of infants, preschoolers, and school-age children.  Participants learn:

  • Why reading aloud to children is so important
  • Tips and techniques to make reading aloud both fun and educational
  • What books to select for children of different ages

Participants in these workshops also receive free books to take home and read to their children.
