We have literacy computer labs for students and
tutors to use at Central Library, Rudisill
Regional Library, Zarrow
Regional Library, Hardesty
Regional Library, and Martin
Regional Library. With the click of a mouse, students can use educational
software to:
- improve their reading, writing and spelling skills
- gain hands-on experience using computers
- learn English as a second language
Computer programs available (by student type):
ESL Students
- Oxford Picture Dictionary (OPD) – Basic vocabulary with pictures.
Covers reading, listening, spelling and pronunciation.
- Ultimate Phonics – Basic phonics and spelling. Great for pronunciation
as well.
Beginning and Intermediate Students
- Omti Reading – Covers letters, reading, spelling, language
rules, and dictionary skills.
- Ultimate Phonics – Basic phonics and spelling.
- A+dvanced Learning System – Wide range of phonics, spelling,
comprehension, word usage, and sentence construction. Options include
study lessons, practice, tests, and even short essay questions. At
Central only
Intermediate and Advanced
- Aztec Learning – Covers grammar, spelling, reading, comprehension,
along with math, science and clerical skills. Three levels of difficulty
in each section with assessments showing where student should start.
Good program for students working towards their GED.
Other Interests
- Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing – Helps students learn to use
the keyboard and improve their typing skills. User friendly for beginning
students if they have some knowledge of computers.
- Virtual Learning Center – Computer Literacy program that covers
basic computer information and skills. Spoken instruction so can be
used by a beginning student with an interest and some knowledge of
computers.
