Adults with low reading skills often have children with low reading skills. However, nurturing a positive attitude toward reading in the home can help put a stop to the cycle of illiteracy. First Book, Krueger Read and Grow, & Friends First Book |
These programs provide books to at-risk preschool and kindergarten children who, for economic reasons, have little or no access to books. Their purpose is to promote a love of reading and lay the foundation for a lifetime of literacy. Each month during the 2006/2007 school-year, approximately 1500 children in 74 classrooms around Tulsa County received a new book to take home. Tulsa's initiative is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, the Krueger Foundation, and the Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries. |
