Choosing materials to use for a tutoring session can be overwhelming. Here
is a helpful breakdown of some of our workbook series for adult learners.
Reading and Comprehension
- Challenger is strong in development of vocabulary, comprehension,
and writing. It features interesting fiction and non-fiction stories, including
many by famous authors. Students should be at a first grade reading level
with a basic sight word vocabulary and have a fairly solid foundation in
phonics. The eight-book series will take readers to an eighth grade reading
level.
- Voyager is the only series that doesn’t have controlled
vocabulary. Instead, it is a comprehension-based series that focuses on teaching
active reading. It includes reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical
thinking components. Many of the stories are written by students. Voyager
involves students in the direction of their learning and has several self-assessment
exercises built into the nine book series. It goes as high as eighth grade.
- Reading for Today is a seven-book series that takes readers
to a sixth grade reading level. This series has a phonics-based approach
with emphasis on word families. Each unit focuses on five skill areas: sight
words, phonics, comprehension, life-coping skills, and writing. Other features
of this series include “At Your Leisure” sections containing
a poem or prose selection written on the same topic, unit reviews for books
2-5, and final reviews for all seven student books. This series works well
for developmentally delayed learners because of the useful pictures and plain
language. The introductory book is excellent for beginning readers.
- Laubach Way to Reading is a structured program that introduces
information in small chunks, with much reinforcement and teacher direction.
It’s particularly strong on phonics, and starts with the basics, like
the names and sounds of the letters. It is especially useful for visual learners.
The four-book series will take readers to around a fifth grade level.
Spelling
- Target Spelling is a unique alternative spelling workbook
that combines a multi-modality instructional approach with the consistent
lesson format, careful pacing, and straightforward design so important to
the success of the special-needs students. Exercises offer practice using
a wide variety of spelling strategies, including word analysis, using words
in context, and focusing on spelling patterns.
GED
- Complete Pre GED and GED Preparation is a complete guide offered
to prepare students for the GED test. This book covers the five subject areas
that are covered on the test: Language Arts, Writing, Language Arts, Reading,
Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. There are also practice GED tests
with answer keys and explanations.
- Pre GED and GED workbooks offer s ingle-subject titles
that give your students as much focused instruction and practice as they
need. Students can focus on one section: Language Arts, Writing, Language
Arts, Reading, Social Studies, Science or Mathematics.
ESL
- English—No Problem is a theme and performance-based
five-level series focused on developing critical thinking and cultural awareness,
as well as building language and life skills. The series addresses themes
and issues meaningful to adults in the U.S. Designed for adult and young
adult English language learners.
- Real-Life English is a complete competency-based, four
skill program for teaching ESL students. The series gives students life skills
they need to succeed in the U.S. Listening, speaking, reading and writing
are developed in separate sections in each unit. Level one is intended for
students with little prior knowledge of English.
