September Adult Learner Book Club Book

September is coming up fast, and the book selected for Book Club this month is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie.

From the library websiteBudding cartoonist Junior leaves his troubled school on the Spokane Indian Reservation to attend an all-white farm town school where the only other Indian is the school mascot.

On the Perils of the English Language

Every so often, we post something about how ridiculous the English language really is. The following excerpt from the poem The Chaos by G Nolst Tenite shows why learning to read and write in English is so difficult, both for English language learners and Adult basic education students. Give it a try, and see how well YOU do! You can see the whole poem here.

Adult Summer Reading Program

That’s right! Now adults (age 18+) have their very own reading challenge this summer too! For reading or listening to any four books between May 27th and August 2nd, adults win a coupon for a free bagel from Panera Bread, and will be entered automatically to win one of 185 awesome prizes!

We want to especially encourage our adult learners to sign up for this great opportunity! Let us know if you complete the Summer Reading Program (be sure to send us your reading log!), and the Literacy Office will send you a $5 gift card for QuikTrip!
