Peggy Dow Helmerich: Before She Was A Philanthropist

Last weekend, Wendell Berry received the Tulsa Library Trust's 2012 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author award in front of a standing-room-only crowd. Peggy Helmerich has made the award, given annually to internationally acclaimed authors who have written a distinguished body of work and made a major contribution to the field of literature, possible since 1985. Before Peggy V. Helmerich was known for her generous donations to Tulsa City-County Library and other organizations in our city, she was known for her film appearances as Peggy Dow. In his review of the film "Bright Victory" Bosley Crowther wrote in the New York Times, "Peggy Dow...the charming young lady whom he [Arthur Kennedy as Larry Nevins] meets at the hospital brings warmth and melting affection to a strictly romantic role..." You can see Mrs. Helmerich in the film Harvey, and you can hear her talk about her acting career in an interview with John Erling.
