Freading eBooks for Android

Freading Basics

  • Freading only offers ebooks and there is a 6 item check-out limit a week. 
  • The check-out period for Freading is 2 weeks with the option of one renewal. 

Step 1: Signing up for Freading

  • You will need:

    • A valid, resident library card (non-resident cards cannot download eBooks from Freading)
    • Internet access
    • A compatible device (e.g. computer, tablet, ereader, smartphone, etc)
    • Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer or the Freading app installed on your Kindle Fire, Android device or Apple device
    • An Adobe ID

    • As a member of the library, you have an account with Freading. You can log in by using your library card number and your last name.
    • Your library card number is the 14-digit number on the back of your card underneath the barcode. Make sure to enter it with all the numbers and no space

Step 2: Downloading the Freading App                                       Freading Android Image 2

  • Go to the Google Play Store, search for Freading and download and install it.
  • Tap the i to authorize your Android device with your Adobe ID.

Step 3: Downloading a book

  • Tap Get Books on the lower right side
  • Find the book you want with the search box and tap the book cover.
  • Tap Login to Download and enter in your library card number and last name.
  • Tap Download ePUB or Download PDF if that’s the only option.
  • After the book is downloaded, Freading will give you the option to Read Now or Read Later. Read Now immediately opens the book and Read Later puts the book in your Library to read later.

    • A compatible device (e.g. computer, tablet, ereader, smartphone, etc)

    • An Adobe ID

Step 2: Installing Adobe Digital Editions

  • After Adobe Digital Editions is installed, it should open automatically (if not, double-click the desktop icon). On the menu bar, click on Help, then click Authorize Computer
  • Enter your Adobe ID and password and click Authorize

         OR

  • Click on Create an Adobe ID to visit Adobe's website and create an Adobe ID
    • After creating an Adobe ID, enter your ID and Password and click Authorize.

Step 3: Downloading an eBook

  • Go to Freading to find an eBook.
  • Find the eBook you want to read and click on the eBook's cover. Then click Login to Download.
  • Enter your library card number and last name. Then click Login.
    • If Freading says your lending limit has been reached and this is your first time logging into Freading, log out and log back in, this should fix the problem.
  • Click Download EPUB (or Download PDF if that's the only option) to download the eBook to your computer. If prompted, choose to open the file instead of saving it (If you do choose to save the file to your computer, be sure you know the default location where downloaded files are saved).
  • If you chose to open the file, Adobe Digital Editions should automatically open the eBook after it has downloaded. If you chose to save the file, navigate to the location where it is saved and double-click on it to open it with Adobe Digital Editions.

Step 1: Signing up for Freading

  • You will need:

Step 2: Downloading the Freading App

  • The easiest way to get Freading on your Kindle Fire is to use a website called SlideMe.
  • Make sure you have enabled "Download from unknown sources" in the device settings. This is different depending on the model of Kindle Fire. In general this is done by:
    • Opening your notifications bar.
    • Select "More" to go to your device's settings.
    • Select "Device".
    • Slide bar to ON for "Allow Installation of Applications From Unknown Sources".

  • Go to http://m.slideme.org and type "Freading" in the search box
  • Click on the "Freading" icon and you will be led to a page where you can download the app
  • Click the button that reads "Download" located right above the app's description.
  • The application will download, but will not install automatically. Once the file downloads, look for a notification indicating there has been a download. Typically this will display in the notification bar at the top of the screen, and you will be able to drag down from the top to view the recent downloads. If you do not see it here, please look under "My Downloads" within your browser. You will be able to find this within your browser's menu.
  • Tap the download, and this will begin the installation process.
  • Once installed, you will need to authenticate the app with your Adobe ID.

Step 3: Downloading an eBook

  • Tap the Get Books icon in the lower right.

  • Tap Login to Download and find Tulsa City- County Library.
  • After finding the library, log in with your library card number and last name.
  • Tap Download ePUB or Download PDF if that’s the only option.
  • After the book is downloaded, Freading will give you the option to Find More or Read Now. Read Now immediately opens the book and Find More puts the book in your library to read later.
