This service position is considered half-time. Members are expected to serve 900 hours within the 10-month service period. The service period for this position runs from September 2013 through June 2014. Members will report to the Community Outreach & Literacy Services Department at 2901 S Harvard Ave, Tulsa, OK, 74114, before traveling to their Afterschool Homework Help Center site.

Job Summary: 

We are looking for creative and self-directed professionals who enjoy working with children to oversee the day-to-day operation of a Afterschool Homework Help Center at one of six Tulsa City-County Library/TCCL locations. You will assist 4th through 8th grade students with homework assignments, compile documented session information, and work with volunteers. The position reports to TCCL’s Afterschool Homework Help Center Program Site Supervisor.

This AmeriCorps service position is not a traditional job and members are not employees of the Tulsa City-County Library. Essential Functions: 
  1. Be familiar with AmeriCorps regulations, TCCL policies and procedures for Afterschool Homework Help Centers;
  2. Oversee day-to-day Afterschool Homework Help Center set-up at designated library location, including organizing on-site resources and materials and working with the library manager, staff and other designated library staff members;
  3. Oversee on-site operation of Afterschool Homework Help Center daily sessions;
  4. Provide homework assistance during Afterschool Homework Help Center operation;
  5. Provide general instruction in utilizing print and online library resources to students and parent(s) or guardian(s);
  6. Compile reports for assigned Afterschool Homework Help Center site;
  7. Participate in all mandatory and/or appropriate trainings, meetings, workshops, and activities offered by AmeriCorps and TCCL;
  8. Perform other duties as instructed and assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
  1. Knowledge of basic school subjects, including English, reading, writing, science, and mathematics;
  2. Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing;
  3. Strong interpersonal and communications skills and an ability to build and maintain positive relationships with Homework Help Center volunteers, students, and library staff;
  4. Ability to work without close supervision;
  5. Ability to present to groups of diverse people and to develop positive, productive relations with people from varying educational and economic backgrounds, demonstrating cultural competence in all interactions;
  6. Ability to work well with K-12 students and adapt instructional strategies;
  7. Proficiency in conducting Internet and database research;
  8. Ability to use basic productivity software (MS Word and Excel), Internet, email, and various other office machines and equipment.
Education & Experience: 
  1. Associate’s degree in Education or related field is required; experience or educational background in education or Oklahoma Teaching Certification strongly preferred
  2. Bilingual preferred.
  3. One to three years of experience in teaching, training, or tutoring preferred
  4. One to three years of experience working with K-12 students preferred
  5. One to three years of experience working with volunteers preferred
  6. Experience working with underserved and diverse populations preferred.
Physical & Environmental Conditions: 

A valid Oklahoma Driver’s License, a safe driving record and personal transportation are required.

Service requires the ability to travel to Afterschool Homework Help Centers and offsite meetings on a daily basis and travel to branch and community events as needed. Travel may also include attending state professional conferences.

Service occasionally requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) long periods of walking on and/or standing for long periods of time and occasionally requires stopping and bending.

The service environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals.
