We Need the Earth and the Earth Needs Us!
Great Books to Celebrate Earth Day
By Kena Hardin, Children's Associate, Central Library Children's Department
The official Earth Day celebration is on April 22, but really, we can (and should!) celebrate Earth Day every day!
There are several ways we can celebrate and care for our beautiful Earth, from committing to use more reusable items and be eco-friendly to using food scraps for compost in gardens to reduce food waste. Earth Day isn’t just about learning how to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, it’s about learning all the ways our Earth has been negatively impacted by humans and how we can remedy those impacts and care for our planet!
Here are a few books that I found insightful and inspired me to make some changes in my life to better care for our planet:
- You Can Change the World shares several ideas for how kids can care for Earth through means like living more sustainably, and it shares the message that anyone can make a difference!
- Old Enough to Save the Planet is a great read for those who want to make a difference and will be inspired by real life examples of kids acting to save the planet.
- Black Beach is the origin story of Earth Day through the eyes of a young child.
You can find more books here, visit your local library, or search for a book on our website.
Happy reading!
