It’s the season of textbooks, calculators, ABC’s and 123’s, recess, and so much more... that’s right, it’s the “Back to School” season! Whether it’s first day jitters, anxiety about making friends, or excitement for a new school year, reading books that are “mirror” and “window” books help children “feel valued, connected, and inspired.” (Yeros 2020)

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn is a touching story about a little raccoon’s first day of school, but he is worried about leaving home and his mom. His mom shares a secret way to carry her love with him while he’s away so that he doesn’t feel alone.
First Day Around the World written by Ibi Zoboi is a nonfiction book about the way school routines look for different children around the world!
A Thank You Letter to My Homeschool written by Deb Adamson is a picture book that celebrates a new school year for those that homeschool! A child shares their gratitude for all the fun experiences and educational adventures they have while homeschooled.
The Big Cheese written by Jory John is a tale about, you guessed it, a big cheese who is the best at everything and wants everyone to know it! Until a new character comes along and comes out on top. This is an unexpected but good story about humility and the importance of good sportsmanship.
All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold is a great, easy to read story about students from different backgrounds learning about each other, appreciating their differences, and celebrating the start of a new school year!
