Celebrating Families – Books that Embrace Every Kind of Family
By Chelsea Appleton, Children's Associate, Hardesty Regional Library
This year, November 23rd - 29th is National Family Week – a wonderful time to celebrate the many ways families come together. Families come in all shapes and sizes: some are big, some small; some have one parent, two moms or two dads, grandparents, foster parents, or friends who feel like family. No matter what they look like, what makes a family special is the love, care, and connection they share.
Reading stories that reflect different types of families helps children see themselves and others represented in the world around them. Books that celebrate all kinds of families can open up conversations about belonging, kindness, and acceptance – important lessons for every young reader.
