What does a family look like? The answer is different for everyone, and that's what makes families so special.

In honor of National Family Week, Tulsa City-County Library celebrates families throughout the month of November with special programs called Generations Celebrations. It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the people who make up our families and remind children that there's no one right way to be a family. Every family is unique, and every family deserves to be valued and respected.

I think it's incredibly important to have these conversations with children early on, and books make it easier. When children see families that look like their own, they feel represented. When they see families that look different, they have an opportunity to learn about others and develop empathy. Try asking your child what they notice about the families in a story. What makes them different? What do they have in common?

And what better way to celebrate family than by making memories together?

Join us Monday, November 23rd at 12 p.m. at Herman & Kate Kaiser Library for Generations Celebrations: Monster Trucks and Teacups! We're throwing a tea party with a twist. After all, we don't have to enjoy the same things or follow the same traditions to come together, celebrate our differences, and make wonderful memories. Kids and their grown-ups are invited to enjoy treats, activities, and quality time together. All ages are welcome! Sponsored by the Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries.

Looking for stories to start the conversation? Check out these books featuring families of all kinds!
