Unearth A Story: Dig Into These Books!
By Kena Hardin, MLIS, Children’s Library Associate, Central Library Children’s Department
The Summer Reading Program (SRP) is almost here! Starting June 1st, you can sign up for the program to track your kids’ reading, earn the SRP medal, join in all the fun events at the libraries, and more!
Research shows that children can lose up to a month of learning during the summer. Keeping kids engaged with reading can significantly reduce their chances of falling into the “summer reading slump.” This year’s SRP theme has a big emphasis on dinosaurs and archaeology and below are a few recommended reads by various children’s librarians and staff in TCCL!
Discover a new dinosaur each day of the year (or at least every day of SRP!). Stunning illustrations and fascinating facts will keep readers of all ages interested.
When a child questions how dinosaurs became extinct, the dad comes up with a list of silly answers. A very fun and funny picture book that’ll be a perfect read during SRP!
Learn about the history and importance of Mesa Verde National Park!
Calm Your Roar Like A Dinosaur
This picture book is a great tool for teaching children calming down techniques through progressive muscle relaxation.
In this nonfiction book, readers will join archaeologists on excavations, marvel at the most incredible archaeological finds, and even witness the world as it was in the past!
There's A Dinosaur In Your Book
In this interactive picture book, readers will help Little Dino make new friends while trying not to wake up Big Dinosaur.
Happy Reading, and we look forward to celebrating Summer Reading Program with you!
