Welcome to the Family, Baby!

Books for siblings for when a new baby is on the way

Kristina Acosta, MLIS, Youth Librarian at the Herman & Kate Kaiser Library

A new baby is on the way? Congratulations! This is a time for celebration and learning. Your first (or second or third) baby might have a lot of feelings and questions about becoming an older sibling, and we have books that are here to help you when having those conversations.

Julius, the Baby of the World by Kevin Henkes. “Lilly is convinced that the arrival of her new baby brother is the worst thing that has happened in their house, until Cousin Garland comes to visit.”

A Baby Sister for Frances by Russell Hoban. “When things change around the house after her baby sister is born, Frances decides to run away--but not too far.”

How to We lcome a New Baby by Jean Reagan. “A new baby is coming! Do you know what to do? Learn how to get ready for the baby, how to make the baby laugh, and how to help Mom and Dad when things get a little topsy-turvy.”

I am A Big Brother/I am A Big Sister by Caroline Church. “Share the joys of becoming a big [sibling]! With the arrival of a new baby comes many transitions, and big [siblings] may need a little extra tender loving care to adjust to a new family situation. This sweet story... is just right to share with and prepare an older sister getting ready for an expanding family.”

You Were the First by Patricia MacLachlan. “Reminds firstborn children that they will always be special--even if another child or children follow--because they have been the first to do many things, including teaching their mother and father to be parents.”

Welcome to the Big Kids Club: What Every Older Sibling Needs to Know! by Chelsea Clinton. “This book will teach you what every big kid needs to know about their baby: what your baby can see, why your baby cries... and so much more (including why your baby poops so much!).”

The Baby Treeby Sophie Blackall. “After learning that his parents are expecting a baby, a young boy asks several people where babies come from and gets a different answer from each before his parents have a chance to give the right answer. Includes advice on answering questions about reproduction.”
