The Hispanic Resource Center is gearing up to celebrate the Hummingbird Award in Literacy Arts. Our honoree for 2026 is Yuyi Morales, renowned children’s author and illustrator. Yuyi captured my heart with her amazing illustrations. Her use of mixed-media is unique and captivating. Today, I would like to share three of my favorites.
Dreamers (Soñadores) is Yuyi Morales’s illustrated memoir about immigrating to the United States with her young son and finding a sense of belonging through the public library. The library opens the door to new worlds, stories, and opportunities, showing how books can inspire anyone to become a dreamer.
Viva Frida offers a glimpse into the life and creativity of Frida Kahlo through Yuyi Morales’s imaginative storytelling and artwork. Using a blend of puppetry, sculpture, painting, and photography, Yuyi creates a magical bilingual book that celebrates art, imagination, and self-expression.
Just a Minute is a lively story that follows Grandma Beetle as she counts down from one to ten while preparing for a birthday celebration. Filled with humor, vibrant illustrations, and elements of Mexican culture and folklore, the book introduces readers to counting in both English and Spanish while celebrating family and tradition.
