Tulsa City-County Library’s popular “Books Sandwiched In” series is branching out this fall. A special four-part series is featured at Hardesty Regional Library’s Frossard Auditorium, 8316 E. 93rd St., Wednesdays in October, 12:10-12:50 p.m.
The series is sponsored by the Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries. Coffee and sandwiches are available for purchase or you may bring your lunch.
The series begins Oct. 3 with “Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels” by Ree Drummond. Glenda Kilmer, manager of the Herman and Kate Kaiser Library, reviews Drummond’s unlikely romance with a chaps-wearing Oklahoma cowboy, from the early days of their courtship through the first year of their marriage. This is not just another love story, it is a universal tale of passion, romance and all-encompassing love.
Oct. 10 features “Caleb’s Crossing” by Geraldine Brooks. Marilyn Newkirk, Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries board member, reviews the luminous story of love, faith magic and adventure. In 1665 Bethia Mayfield yearns for an education that is closed to her by her gender. She encounters Caleb, a young son of a Wampanoag chieftain, and the two forge a friendship that draws each into the alien world of the other.
The featured book for Oct. 17 is “Washington: A Life” by Ron Chernow. Teresa Adwan, Tulsa lecturer, lawyer and community leader, reviews the story that dispels the stereotype of a stolid, unemotional “Father of Our Country.” Behind the somber, grave image is a passionate man of fiery opinions and many moods.
The series concludes with Maureen Taylor’s “Last Muster: Images of the Revolutionary War Generation” Oct. 24. Vane Lucas, president of Mathnasium of South Tulsa, reviews this remarkable collection of rare 19th-century photographic images of the Revolutionary War generation and the stories of our nation’s founding fathers, slaves, Native Americans, children and politicians.
