Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Tulsa City-County Library during a series of free family events honoring the colorful traditions of the Hispanic culture.
The annual event is coordinated by TCCL’s Hispanic Resource Center. The design of the Hispanic Resource Center is to provide cultural, informational and educational resources, as well as activities and services for both Spanish- and English-speaking families. The center was established to meet the educational and cultural need of Tulsa County’s growing Hispanic community.
“Each year, library staff plan educational and fun family programs showcasing Hispanic resources at TCCL,” said Sara Martinez, Hispanic Resource Center coordinator. “There are programs of interest for all ages. We invite everyone to discover the contributions of the Hispanic culture throughout history.”
Hispanic Heritage Month programs are sponsored by the Tulsa City-County Library’s Hispanic Resource Center, Tulsa Library Trust and Hispanic American Foundation.
Books, Reading and Writing
“East Side Pride: This Land is Your Land. Your Voice with Librotraficante” Sept. 21, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Martin Regional Library. This is a citywide invitation to youths aged 15-21 of all backgrounds to join us for a Latino Literary Arts Fest celebrating the rising Latino cultural presence in Tulsa, with special guest Librotraficante. All ages are welcome to attend. Co-sponsored by Louder Than a Bomb-Tulsa and the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice, with support from Harold and Yolanda Charney.
“An Evening with Author Matt de la Pena” Sept. 24, 7 p.m., Martin Regional Library. Matt de la Pena is the author of four critically acclaimed young adult novels: “Ball Don’t Lie,” “Mexican Whiteboy,” “We Were Here” and “I Will Save You.” He also is the author of the award-winning picture book “A Nation’s Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis.”
“A Book-A-Month Discussion in Bixby” Sept. 25, 2 p.m., Bixby Library, 20 E. Breckenridge. Join is to discuss works by Latino authors including Demetria Martinez’s latest novel “The Block Captain’s Daughter.”
“An Evening with Cristina Garcia Via Skype” Oct. 10, 7-8 p.m., Martin Regional Library. Join us for this discussion with Garcia via Skype in preparation for her upcoming visit to Tulsa on Oct. 19 for the Nimrod International Journal’s Conference for Readers and Writers. Sponsored by the Hispanic American Foundation, Tulsa Library Trust, Hispanic Resource Center and Nimrod.

“Mexican Fiesta Night/Noche Mexicana” Sept. 13, 7-9 p.m. Kendall-Whittier Library, 21 S. Lewis. Bring your lawn chair, and sit and stay awhile to enjoy the sounds of Mariachi Santo Domingo, feast on chips and salsa, help the children break a piñata and just have fun.
“Drumming with a Latin Beat with John Dellavedova” Sept. 28, 2 p.m., Broken Arrow Library, 300 W. Broadway; and Oct. 2, 4 p.m., Maxwell Park Library, 1313 N. Canton. Kids can move to the Latin groove and get the opportunity to experiment with some funky percussion instruments.
“Fiesta in Glenpool Featuring Tierra Mestiza Dance Group” Sept. 28, 2 p.m., Glenpool Library, 730 E. 141st St. Families are invited to sing and dance.
“Spanish Flamenco Dance with Reflejos Flamencos” Oct. 5, 2 p.m., Suburban Acres Library, 4606 N. Garrison. These dancers will dazzle all who come to experience this passionate cultural expression from Spain.
