Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month With a Visit From Author and Artist Carmen Lomas Garza

Award-winning author and artist Carmen Lomas Garza will visit Tulsa City-County Library to present two special programs in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.    Spend an exciting evening with artist Carmen Lomas Garza at Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.    Garza will share her beautiful picture books, talk about her life and works and celebrate the Hispanic Resource Center’s quinceanera (15th anniversary).  Copies of her works will be available for purchasing.    Garza will present “Papel Picado (Paper Cutouts) Making Magic Windows” at Martin Regional Library, Nov. 8, at 10 a.m.  This workshop introduces the traditional Mexican craft of papel picado.  Garza is one of the foremost Mexican American painters and printmakers.  Seating is limited, call 918-549-7597 to register.    Her artwork depicts childhood memories of family and friends engaged in a wide range of activities seen in Mexican American communities.    Children’s Book Press of San Francisco published Garza’s bilingual book of paintings and short stories, “Family Pictures/Cuadros de Familia” in 1990.  Since its publications, more than 400,000 copies have sold.  Other best-selling books by Garza include “In My Family/En Mi Familia,” “Magic Windows/Ventanas Magicas” and “Making Magic Windows: Creating Papel Picado/Cut-Paper Art.”    In 2007 the Los Angeles Unified School District approved the community’s nomination for the name of their new primary school as the Carmen Lomas Garza Primary Center.  The school serves approximately 200 pre-kindergarten through second grade students.  Garza said the honor was the result of area teachers using her children’s bilingual picture books for curriculum development.    Garza’s visit is sponsored by the Tulsa Library Trust, Tulsa City-County Library Staff Association, Hispanic Resource Center, Arvest Bank, Hispanic American Foundation, Tulsa Intercultural Association, The Mary K. Chapman Foundation and George Kaiser Family Foundation.    For more information on Hispanic Heritage Month programming, call the AskUs Hotline, 918-549-7323 or go to www.TulsaLibrary.org/hrc. # # #
