In honor of African-American History Month, Suburban Acres Library, 4606 N. Garrison, is hosting an essay contest for students in grades five through seven.
The theme is “An African-American of the 21st century is important to me because he/she has…” Essays must be 1-2 well-developed paragraphs and no more than two pages in length. Submissions must include a cover page and be neatly printed or typed. A computer is available for use at any Tulsa City-County Library.
Entries must be turned in to any Tulsa City-County Library by the end of the day on Feb. 26. All participants are invited to attend the awards ceremony at Suburban Acres Library, March 15 at Noon. First- and second-place winners will be awarded prizes and have the opportunity to read their winning submissions. Refreshments also will be served.
“The purpose of the contest has always been to give students a platform to express themselves, to recognize the talent many of the students possess and promote the library as a source of direction in the community,” said Sherrie Wallace, Suburban Acres Library manager. “The contest is the library’s way of encouraging students to explore their creative writing and research skills along with promoting library use and resources.”
