What does fishing have to do with reading? At the Tulsa City-County Library, fishing is a big hook that entices thousands of area youngsters to participate in the library’s Summer Reading Program each year.
For more than 15 years, the News On 6 has championed reading and literacy by offering a fishing trip with News On 6 meteorologist Dick Faurot as one of the prizes in the end-of-the-summer drawing for kids who finish the Summer Reading Program. Each year, six lucky youngsters win the coveted fishing trip with this expert fisherman; it is one of the Summer Reading Program’s most-favorite prizes!
In addition to sponsoring the Summer Reading Program, the News On 6 also features Tulsa City-County Library as a regular on its highly watched noon show on the first Monday of every month. The monthly segment gives the library a wonderful opportunity to share new books, programs and services with thousands of families across Tulsa County.
For the News On 6’s longstanding commitment to reading and literacy, Tulsa City-County Library inducted the News On 6 into the Library Hall of Fame on Saturday, Dec. 5 during the Tulsa Library Trust’s 2015 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award public presentation featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning military historian Rick Atkinson. As a Hall of Fame inductee, the News On 6 received an engraved marble obelisk, given by the Tulsa Library Trust and the Tulsa City-County Library.
“All of us at Oklahoma’s Own News On 6 are proud to be a part of the Tulsa City-County Library Summer Reading Program,” said Houston Hunt, vice president of marketing. “To be able to help inspire the next generation is invaluable and something we feel lucky to be able to do.”
Tulsa City-County Library’s No. 1 goal is that the children of Tulsa County will grow up able to compete globally.
“The Summer Reading Program inspires children to become lifelong readers and learners, which is key to their future success,” said Kim Johnson, Tulsa City-County Library’s chief operating officer. “We are so thankful for community partners like the News On 6 that help us bring this goal to fruition.”
The Library Hall of Fame was established in 1982 to recognize and honor organizations and individuals who have provided leadership and made exemplary contributions of time, talent and energy toward the development of the Tulsa City-County Library.
As a member of the Library Hall of Fame, the News On 6 joins a prestigious list of former honorees including: Alfred E.
