Tulsa City-County Library (TCCL) treasures books, but treasures children even more. TCCL’s annual Books to Treasure program makes the power of art and literature accessible to children of all ages with a live event highlighting a beloved children’s book creator and a select piece of their work.

This year’s program features author and illustrator Katherine Roy, who will give a free presentation and book signing in Connor’s Cove at Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St., on Friday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.

Sponsored by the Tulsa Library Trust through a grant from the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation since 2003, the free Books to Treasure program has grown into a Tulsa tradition for all second grade students in Tulsa County. Through the program, each second grader receives a free copy of the featured illustrator’s book, plus the chance to get a custom library card with an illustration from the book. This year’s featured book is “How To Be an Elephant,” written and illustrated by Roy.

Roy is the award-winning author and illustrator of many science-based books for kids, including “Making More: How Life Begins” and her Robert F. Sibert Honor Book “Neighborhood Sharks: Hunting With the Great Whites of California’s Farallon Islands.” She is also the illustrator of Barb Rosenstock’s “Otis and Will Discover the Deep,” Richard Ho’s “Red Rover,” and Kirsten W. Larson’s “The Fire of Stars,” to be released in February 2023. Find all of these titles in the library’s catalog at www.tulsalibrary.org/books-music-movies.

To enhance the author’s presentation, TCCL’s children’s librarians have developed fun activities, reading lists, videos and more all about elephants. Find them at www.tulsalibrary.org/kids-read-curious-world.
