Discover and share your family’s heritage from the comfort of home with a series of virtual programs from Tulsa City-County Library’s Genealogy Center. During July, Family History Month, use live and prerecorded webinars to examine free tools and resources that can help you explore your ancestry, whether you’re a new or seasoned genealogy researcher.

   All prerecorded Family History Month programs are available on the Genealogy Center’s webpage, https://www.tulsalibrary.org/genealogy-center. Virtual workshops include:

  • A series of presentations by genealogist Mark Lowe, including “Expanding & Exploring Details from Published Resources,” “Finding Your Landless Ancestors,” “At the Big House” and “Gravestones, Coffins and Unmarked Cemeteries: Techniques to Identify and Locate.”
  • “Overview of The University of Tulsa's Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 Archive, 1920-2007, and Other Related Collections with Marc Carlson.” Join Marc Carlson, director of special collections and university archives at The University of Tulsa, as he shares highlights from the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 Archive collection.
  • “Beginning Genealogy.” Learn how to start your family research and discover the steps, strategies and records useful for beginning your search. Presented by TCCL Genealogy Center Manager Kathy Huber.
  • “Researching Genealogy.” Explore genealogy sources to enhance your research by looking at the Genealogy Center website and some free websites available for research. Presented by TCCL Genealogy Associate Lisa Hansen.
  • “Free Online Resources for Genealogists.” This program covers free genealogy-specific websites as well as a few general sites useful for family history research. Presented by TCCL Genealogy Associate Tessa Brawley-Barker.
  • “DIY Personal Digital Archiving.” Explore best practices for organizing and storing your digital assets, presented by former TCCL Digital Literacy Associate Katlin Seagraves.
  • “Online Legacies and Digital Estate Planning.” Learn the basics of digital estate planning, presented by former TCCL Digital Literacy Associate Katlin Seagraves.
  • A lecture series with the director of the Family History Library and chief genealogist officer of FamilySearch.org, David Rencher. Presentations include “FamilySearch Historical Collections – Tips and Tricks,” “Irish Emigration and Irish Immigration,” “Scots-Irish Workshop Part 1: Presbyterian Church Records,” “Scots-Irish Workshop Part 2: Plantation and Settlement of Ulster in the 17th Century” and a live Q&A with Rencher from June 2021.

Live virtual events from the Genealogy Center include:

  • A live Zoom Q&A with HistoryGeo.com founder Greg Boyd on Tuesday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. Participants must at www.tulsalibrary.org/events to get the Zoom link.
  • A live Zoom Q&A with genealogist Mark Lowe on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 10:30 a.m. Participants must register at www.tulsalibrary.org/events to get the Zoom link.    

   In addition to these virtual events, databases such as Ancestry.com can be used remotely for a limited time. Ancestry.com offers access to more than 1 billion names in primary-source document images, detailed color maps and other genealogical research resources. TCCL cardholders can log in to this database at https://www.tulsalibrary.org/research/databases/a with their last name and card number.
