Discover the contributions of the hip-hop culture when TCCL presents a series of programs featuring local artists, demonstrations and dances.

    Throughout April and May, Central Library, Fifth St. and Denver Ave., features the display “Idea Box: Hip-Hop.” Designed as an audio and visual experience, the display includes interactive DJ equipment as well as art created by local artists from the Black Moon Collective and Clean hands.

   Central Library will also host a series of programs highlighting some of the main forms of the hip-hop culture like poetry, dance and music.

  • “Poetry Nite – Your Verse” April 12, 6:30-8 p.m., Pocahontas Greadington Learning and Creativity Center. Join us for an evening of slam-style poetry featuring local poets sharing their own works.   • “An Evening with Poet Quraysh Ali Lansana” May 8, 6:30-7:30 p.m., Pocahontas Greadington Learning and Creativity Center. Join us for poetry, insights and truth with nationally renowned poet Quraysh Ali Lansana. Born in Oklahoma, Lansana is the author of “The Whiskey of Our Discontent: Gwendolyn Brooks as Conscience and Change Agent” and more than 10 other books of poetry.   • “Hip-Hop Nite Concert in the Garden” May 24, 6:30-8 p.m. Enjoy TCCL’s first hip-hop concert in the garden at Central Library. The evening features live performances by local rappers and hip-hop artists. Participants can create stenciled images or learn graffiti lettering techniques.

   TCCL has numerous resources for all levels of creators to use for their next project. From monthly creative writing groups to an audio lab and video editing software, artists can find assistance and inspiration at the library.
