“The wheels on the bus go round and round…”

A new and colorful mobile library experience is making its debut ahead of TCCL’s 2019 summer reading program. The “Reading Roadshow” visits early childhood facilities and family literacy programs in Tulsa County on a monthly and quarterly schedule. In addition to providing requested materials and a collection of developmentally appropriate materials for preschoolers and their caregivers to check out, librarians also present “Build a Reader” storytimes that focus on interactive programs for early literacy development.

Through TCCL’s Build a Reader program, parents, caregivers and young children build a foundation for literacy by participating in these five activities: talking, playing, singing, reading and writing. Research shows that regularly doing these five activities prepare children to enter kindergarten with better language and learning comprehension skills. Each of the five activities is represented by animals who are featured as larger-than-life artwork on the vehicle’s exterior.

“Young readers will enjoy the Reading Roadshow’s inviting and colorful design as well as all of the books they can check out,” said Tracy Scott, Community Outreach & Literacy Services manager. “From the Reading Roadshow and Bookmobile to the delivery of materials to homebound customers, TCCL is working to bring books to more readers.”

The Reading Roadshow was made possible through the support of the Tulsa Library Trust. The Waters Charitable Foundation funded the vehicle and the mobile library’s collection was funded by the Flint Family Foundation.
