Girl Scout Cookie Box Construction Contest Takes Shape at Hardesty Regional Library

    Hardesty Regional Library, 8316 E. 93rd St., will transform as a roomful of emerging female engineers use 3,000 empty Girl Scout Cookie boxes to build designs inspired by the 2014 Sochi Olympics.    Six teams will begin construction Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10:30 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.  Judging will be based on originality, creativity, technical difficulty, teamwork and advanced meeting with their mentor.  Prizes will be awarded at gold, silver and bronze levels.

Suburban Acres Library Presents African-American History Month Essay Contest

     In honor of African-American History Month, Suburban Acres Library, 4606 N. Garrison, is hosting an essay contest for students in grades five through seven.    The theme is “An African-American of the 21st century is important to me because he/she has…”  Essays must be 1-2 well-developed paragraphs and no more than two pages in length.  Submissions must include a cover page and be neatly printed or typed.  A computer is available for use at any Tulsa City-County Library.

   Join local religious leaders and experts as they address the topic “The Challenge of Civil Discourse: Religious Passion, Extremism and the Problem of Perception” at the Oklahoma Center for Community and Justice’s 2014 Interfaith Trialogue Series in February.    Sponsored by OCCJ and funded in part by the Tulsa Library Trust’s Alfred E. Aaronson Lecture Series Endowment, the three-part discussion series is scheduled on Sundays, Feb. 2, Feb. 9 and Feb. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at varying locations.

Sign Up to Become a "Book Giver" During World Book Night

As an official distribution site for “World Book Night,” April 23, 2014, Tulsa City-County Library customers can apply to be “book givers” and receive 20 paperback books to give away for free. World Book Night is a national campaign to encourage reading and giving. On this day, 25,000 volunteers throughout the U.S. will each receive 20 books to give to light or non-readers and to those without the means or access to books. Selected book givers will receive their books to give at a library reception the week before World Book Night on April 23.

Rudisill Regional Library Invites Families to Celebrate Kwanzaa

Since the creation of Kwanzaa in the 1960s, the weeklong event has established itself as an annual celebration of community enrichment. Families are invited to “Celebrate Kwanzaa” Dec. 26, 6-8:30 p.m. at the Rudisill Regional Library, 1520 N. Hartford. This event is sponsored by the Tulsa City-County Library’s African-American Resource Center and the Tulsa Library Trust.
