Celebrate Kwanzaa Program Featured at Rudisill Regional Library

Since the creation of Kwanzaa in the 1960s, the weeklong event has established itself as an annual celebration of community enrichment. Families are invited to “Celebrate Kwanzaa” Dec. 28, 6-8:30 p.m. at the Rudisill Regional Library, 1520 N. Hartford. This event is sponsored by the Tulsa City-County Library’s African-American Resource Center. Join African-American dancers and drummers to celebrate the harvest and the beginning of a successful year featuring Chief Amusan Egunwale and the African dance troop.

Active and Retired Military Fines Forgiveness Month

Active service members and veterans can simply show their military identification along with their library card to have late fees waived. Tulsa City-County Library Announces Return to Previous Paper-Based Summer Reading Program

Despite reduced participation, post-event survey indicates strong appreciation for the program and customers’ desire to continue using library services Officials with the Tulsa City-County Library intend to restore participation in the Summer Reading Program back to the vibrant numbers for which the program is known. The 2015 program had 16,013 participants, a 52.7% decline from 33,857 participants in 2014.

Library Presents Discussion Series on End-of-Life Issues

   Tulsa City-County Library and Clarehouse, a nonprofit community for the dying, are partnering to offer a series of free public programs to discuss end-of-life issues.     “Dying: Can We Talk?” is three interactive programs addressing the widespread need for education in goals-of-care planning and navigating the health-care system.  Library materials on the subject will be displayed for library customers to check-out.

   Teen Read Month is a national celebration for teens to read for the fun of it.  A chance to break away from the textbooks and enjoy programs designed for them.    The 2015 theme is “Get Away @ Your Library.”  Free events and author visits are planned throughout Tulsa City-County libraries to showcase library resources for young adults.  Programs are designed to offer entertainment as well as a dose of education.    Teens get an extra bonus during the month by receiving free replacement library cards as well as having late fees waived.

Tulsa Library Trust to Present 2016 Anne V. Zarrow Award for Young Readers' Literature to Gordon Korman

   New York Times best-selling author Gordon Korman is the winner of the Tulsa Library Trust’s 2016 Anne V. Zarrow Award for Young Readers’ Literature.  He will accept the award at a public presentation at Hardesty Regional Library’s Connor’s Cove, 8316 E. 93rd St., Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m.  He also will present awards to winners of the 2016 Young People’s Creative Writing Contest awards at the ceremony.

   Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Tulsa City-County Library during a series of free family events honoring the colorful traditions of the Hispanic culture.    The annual event is coordinated by TCCL’s Hispanic Resource Center.  The design of the Hispanic Resource Center is to provide cultural, informational and educational resources, as well as activities and services for both Spanish- and English-speaking families.  The center was established to meet the educational and cultural need of Tulsa County’s growing Hispanic community.
