Celebrate Our Nation’s First President During An Evening With George Washington

   During the first State of the Union address delivered in 1790, President George Washington was optimistic “in the pleasing and arduous task of ensuring to our fellow Citizens the blessings, which they have a right to expect, from a free, efficient and equal Government.”    All ages are invited to spend “An Evening With George Washington” on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 7-8:30 p.m. in Central Library’s Aaronson Auditorium, Fifth Street and Denver Avenue.  The program, presented by Mount Vernon and Tulsa City-County Library, is free and open to the public.

   One thing is missing from the bookshelves of the world: your perspective.  Write your own story.  Be your own author.      Local wordsmiths are invited to enter the 40th Annual Adult Creative Writing Contest for a chance to win cash.  A new category, Graphic Story, encourages writers with an artistic talent to submit their best original artwork and story.  The annual event is sponsored by The Friends of the Tulsa City-County Libraries.

In an effort to encourage healthy habits and alleviate a child’s fear of doctor visits, the Owasso Library, 103 W. Broadway, presents “Teddy Bear Clinic,” Jan. 27, 10:30-11 a.m.  This free family event is hosted by MedExpress.    Children, ages 3-5, can bring their teddy bear, or other stuffed animal friend, to learn about hand washing, X-rays, splinters and more.

Poet Billy Collins to receive 2016 Helmerich award

   TULSA, Okla. --- America’s favorite poet, Billy Collins, is coming to Tulsa Dec. 2 and 3 to receive the Tulsa Library Trust’s 2016 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award.    The former U.S. Poet Laureate is the first poet to receive the prestigious prize; other past Distinguished Author Award winners, such as Wendell Berry and Joyce Carol Oates, have published poetry but are better known for their novels and nonfiction.
