ODL Grant Supports Library's Adult Literacy Service

   The Oklahoma Department of Libraries announced that a $9,500 grant was awarded to Tulsa City-County Library’s Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service to support local adult literacy efforts.    According to the 2003 Oklahoma State Assessment of Adult Literacy, 12 percent of Oklahomans over the age of 16 read at below basic level, with another 31 percent of adults having only the most basic reading skills. Individuals at these levels often face significant obstacles when trying to succeed in the workplace, community and everyday life.

"I'll Do It: Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher and the Fight for Civil Rights" Play to be Performed at Rudisill Regional Library

Tulsa City-County Library will present a benchmark in Oklahoma history, as well as U.S. history, with “I’ll Do It: Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher and the Fight for Civil Rights” Sept. 29, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Rudisill Regional Library, 1520 N. Hartford.  The play is free and open to all ages.

Louder Than a Bomb - Tulsa, Featured at Central Library

   Robbie Q. Telfer, author of “Spiking the Sucker Punch,” will open a portal to a world of wonder, whimsy and poetry as he hosts the prequel to the third season of the teen poetry festival Louder Than a Bomb – Tulsa, with a focus on humor in writing and performing.    Teens, ages 14-18, are invited to learn about poetry and more from Telfer, Sept. 13, 6-8:30 p.m. in Central Library’s Aaronson Auditorium, Fourth Street and Denver Avenue.  The event is free and open to the public.

Tulsa Library Trust Receives $2,000 Literacy Grant From Target

   The Tulsa Library Trust recently received a $2,000 grant from Target continuing its support of the family literacy project “Every Child Ready to Read,” formerly known as “Read to Me, I’ll Read to You,” offered by Tulsa City-County Library’s Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Service.    “We are thrilled to have Target’s continued support of this project,” said Shawna Smith, family literacy specialist. “Starting at birth, children need caring adults reading aloud to them as frequently as possible so that they will be ready to read when they start school.”

Summer Readers Earn Free Night with Tulsa Drillers

CHUCK WAGON READIES KEY INGREDIENTS DISPLAY TO HIT THE TRAIL

   The Chuck wagon is getting ready to hit the trail.    The last day to enjoy the Smithsonian Institution’s “Key Ingredients: America by Food” is Aug. 3, when it will roll out of the Collinsville Library, 1223 Main.  Since its opening on June 16, the display has helped customers explore the influences of culture, ethnicity, landscape and ritual on the food and flavors of our nation.

Great Lego Build Off Finals At Central Library

     All summer, children and teens have competed at various Tulsa City-County Libraries to build the best Lego creation.  Now they will face off for the ultimate in Lego building bragging rights.    To qualify for the finals children built an original design based on the Summer Reading Program theme “Dream Big: Read.”  Teens created an original design based on the Summer Reading Program theme “Own the Night.”
