Libraries Seek Teen Team Summer Volunteers

   Teens who love books and libraries are encouraged to volunteer at their local library this summer.  It’s a cool place to be and be seen.    Tulsa City-County Library is currently accepting applications for Teen Team volunteers for the 2013 summer.  Applicants must be 13-15 years old and capable of volunteering several hours a week at a TCCL location.  Duties include assisting librarians with activities associated with the children’s summer reading program.

2013 Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award

WHAT: The Peggy V. Helmerich Distinguished Author Award is an annual award given by the Tulsa Library Trust. Its purpose is to give formal recognition, on behalf of the Tulsa County community, to internationally acclaimed authors who have written a distinguished body of work and made a major contribution to the field of literature and letters. The award consists of a $40,000 cash prize and an engraved crystal book.

   Did you know that nearly 2.8 million youth in the Unites States will run away this year? Thanks to Safe Place sites like the Tulsa City-County Library, local youth have a safe place to go in times of crisis.    Operated locally by Youth Services of Tulsa, Safe Place provides runaways and other youth in a crisis a safe place in their own neighborhoods, where they can seek help with issues like abuse, serious family conflicts and other dangers.

2013 Interfaith Holocaust Commemoration to Address "The Kindertransports"

   From Dec. 1, 1938, to the start of World War II on Sept. 1, 1939, nearly 10,000 Jewish children were sent, without their parents, out of Nazi Germany, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia to safety in Great Britain. While more than 1.5 million children perished in the Holocaust, these children were saved by the Kindertransport rescue movement.

Library to offer free workshop series focusing on managing chronic health conditions

   Thousands of Oklahomans live with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, stroke, arthritis and pain. Understanding how to self-manage these conditions can mean the difference between daily struggles and living healthier, more comfortable lives.    Area residents are invited to learn to manage their chronic health issues through a free workshop series, “Living Stronger, Living Longer, Living With Chronic Conditions.” Participants will meet at Herman and Kate Kaiser Library once a week for six weeks, starting March 15.
